Sand is the second most extracted resource in the world after water. It is used for construction, but also for reinforcing and raising the coast as protection against rising sea levels. In the Netherlands, we mainly extract this sand from the North Sea, which can have a considerable impact on the nature of the seabed.
So how can we ensure that these adverse effects are as small as possible? The OR ELSE project, in which DigiShape is a partner, will develop a method for this. Marine ecologist Dr Martin Baptist of Wageningen Marine Research is leading the project and talks about it in this interview.
